Located vnear the Church of San Lazzaro in Borgo: a place of passage, healing and history in the heart of the Trionfale district
Among the lesser-known folds of Rome, in the Trionfale neighborhood, lies a small jewel of spirituality and history: the Church of San Lazzaro in Borgo. Far from the crowds but very close to the Vatican, this little church tells a fascinating story of faith, pilgrimages and emperors.
Its origin is linked to a touching event: it was built as an ex voto by a French doctor who, miraculously cured of leprosy, wanted to dedicate it to St. Lazarus, patron saint of lepers. The area, in fact, was traditionally designated for hospitals and places to receive the sick, peripheral to the center of ancient Rome.
But there is more. The church stands along the historic Via Triumphalis, the ancient road taken by victorious armies during the Roman Empire to triumphantly enter the city. And in later centuries, even in the Christian era, this stretch maintained its symbolic value: it was here, near San Lazzaro, that emperors and sovereigns visiting the Pope would stop. It was the place where they stopped before the papal audience, to change their clothes and prepare for their meeting with the successor of Peter.
Today, as you enter the church, you can still feel the silent and collected atmosphere of yesteryear. It is a place out of time, where miracles, ancient traditions and great historical events are intertwined. To visit San Lazzaro in Borgo is to discover a hidden face of Rome: more intimate, more authentic, and incredibly fascinating.
